Heritage Production Logs

(Unit 28 - 2)

Log 1 - 21/09/11

Today's interview I feel went smoothly as there were no major mistakes and the pace of the interview was steady enough to gather the information needed from the interviewee.

In terms of things that didn't go according to plan, insects such as spiders were numerous in the location, at one point this distracted the interviewee and the interview had to be stopped. Reflecting back on the situation and how this incident could have been avoided, its hard to reconcile how we could have prevented an insect infestation as we were not previously aware of the obstacle prior to the interview.

Another element that wasn't favoured was the tendency of the interviewee to go off point when being asked a question. This occurred most when expanding on questions, giving her opinion instead of narrative information. Looking back on this, it was unpredictable what answers the interviewee would have given, but I feel they could have better constructed their answers if the questions were better explained.

Lighting equipment was also faulty as one of the three lamps we were using had an orange bulb so we were only able to use two. In future, equipment needs to be tested before hand to avoid these types of obstacles. This was the same for the microphones battery life which ran out half way through the interview.  At that time we took a break as to use the time we had effectively, as well as talking with the interviewee about the content discussed.

After capturing and processing all the footage gained from the interview, I can now break down the film into separate categories to better organize clips on the editing timeline.
So far both me and Deborah have contributed to editing the interview and while we have both attempted to edit a rough draft for the introduction, we are still not satisfied.
One tedious process which tends to get in the way is audio. Even though the footage recorded was substantial, audio from the boom mike has to be synchronized with the film within the edit. However this job can be made easier by doing this first, providing you have all the audio to match the footage. But unfortunately we lost parts of the audio for the intro, so this made editing more tedious.

Log 3 - 14/10/11

The interview is beginning to come together, however me and Deborah are far from finished. So far we have decided to cut out poor content instead of harshly editing it down to fit it into the steady pace of the interview. Other elements such as cut aways are being experimented with, but thats all they are being used for at this current stage. In terms of content, Jaki's education has broadly been covered, but this is not the main focus as the stories told aren't as compelling as other ones contributed from the rest of the footage. I feel that in future I'll need to better organize my edit for time purposes as this is waisted trying to capture every aspect of the interview.

Log 4 - 21/10/11

Today we gave Jaki's interview a break and instead took part in an activity that informed us on additional camera techniques and interviewing skills. The class was split into four groups, assuring that we changed job roles while capturing so that every one would have a chance to use equipment. Our task was to interview members of the public and ask them the question, "Who's your favorite black icon from past or present and why?" The purpose of this was not only to improve our skills, but further increase our understanding of the black community in correlation to 'Black History Month'.
At first we struggled to attract interviewees, however we unexpectedly managed to interview one of the organizers of 'Black History Month' around the Burton area. The two methods we used to capture was frame rate and static recording. The aim was to capture a still portrait of the interviewee at 50 fps and the dub the audio recorded over the footage captured.
In edit we compressed the interviewee still from 50 fps to 25 fps and added the audio beneath to create a moving atmosphere. After render, I felt that we achieved the original goal with help from the addition of emotionally stung music.

From one filming task to another, today we filmed another short film to illustrate a dream. The task was inspired by a Vimeo project and its aim was to recreate a dream scenario using film. We were put into groups of five and then sent off the decide and shot what we needed to recreate a dream inspired story. Our group decided on recreating a dream of Lizzy's which portrayed her trapped in a telephone box while everyone ignored her. As an extra, my role was to walk around a telephone box, shout down a phone line spouting nonsense and give speak irrational thought while sitting for a panning shot. The end result paid off however which can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu4ih_ds8ig&feature=channel_video_title

After half term we returned unexpected as to what was to be briefed to us. Ironically with Halloween just finished we were commissioned to produce a low-budget zombie film in which a group of survivors fought off the living dead. To help us on our mission, a special effects artist came in and advised us on how to produce convincing wounds and skin tones using makeup to dress up our zombie personas. But before we began to design our zombies, we all had a lesson in creating fake blood. I found it simple enough to grasp; one beaker flask to mix liquid toffee and red food coloring into to produce a sickening blood red substance. After we designed our zombies using a blank face as a template. My zombie displayed a large gorged wound across the forehead as well as a grey and purple skin tone to suggest that  my skin had become rotten and withered.
After a walking dead lunch, we began filming under the roads in the tunnels in Burton park. The plot was simple, we crawled out of the tunnels, ran after the survivors, devoured one of them, were slowly killed one by one till the last zombie killed the remaining survivor. Throughout the process of the shoot we used allot of fake blood and made up of low-budget effects to illustrate the individual deaths of each zombie. Explicate gore such as body organs and flesh were replaced with mince meat and lamp kidneys.
My particular role as a zombie was to walk at a moderate pace and be the last one to kill the remaining survivor.

Following on from the low-budget zombie film, I carried on with the Jaki interview today and have managed to produce a rough cut. Achieving this goal meant that I had to synchronies the clips with the audio as well as develop a flowing story line. Also to help add to the diversity to retain interest I had to insert cut aways at appropriate times during the interview.

Log 8 17/11/11

Today I finally gave the finishing touches to the Jaki interview. Having produced a short cut, I better improved the interview by inserting additional cut aways and clips.
Now that I had a final cut, all I had to do was color correct the whole timeline. This however was a tedious task as I had to correct the color on each clip, meaning that every individual clip had a few minutes rendering time.
After a few hours I had completed Jakis interview, all there was left to do now was to submit it to the Heritage projects organizers so that they could give their final verdict.

The Jaki interview has failed! Sound and a selection of cut aways were not sufficient for the final piece. As an editor I feel I compiled the footage given to me to the best possible standard. Sound was missing, this was known from the beginning of the edit, and there were not enough cutaways to cut to. Because of this Jaki is being reshot and edited outside of the production.
On a lighter note, I have produced the 'Empire Windrush' animation sequence for the Heritage project. The sequence was created in after effects using motion graphics to simulate the 'Empire Windrush' surfing across the ocean through a vairety of different weather conditions.
